Did you know physical therapy is not just for athletes who have been injured? It’s also for anyone who is active and wants to prevent injury, or work to improve strength, coordination and functional mobility. Michael Johnson Performance Sports Medicine’s skilled team can develop a comprehensive plan to meet your goals.
Today’s athletes require proper conditioning and maintenance of the body beyond regular exercise and nutrition. The experienced MJP team offers a range of pre-and post-injury testing and treatment options to help athletes regain their ultimate level of performance, while reducing their risk for injury.
Located within the MJP facilities in McKinney, Texas, the MJP Sports Med facility provides services and resources that are second to none. Led by Ben Seagraves, Director of Sports Medicine, the physical therapists and performance specialists help athletes reach their highest level of potential.
“Michael Johnson is synonymous with excellence, and that is what we strive for within Sports Medicine,” Ben said. “We don’t take it lightly that professional athletes from every sport entrust us with their rehab. All of our full-time therapists not only have their doctorate, they are also Sports Certified Specialists who have experience working with athletes at all levels. Working with our performance specialist, we strive to utilize the best evidence-based treatments to allow our patients to return to their sport quickly and safely.”
Being located within a 25,000-square foot training facility, not only has a convenience factor, but also a large advantage to recovering athletes. When an athlete reaches the stage in their recovery where they begin sport specific drills, MJP performance specialists work closely with the doctors and therapists to develop a return to sport workout plan. The specialist can then work with the athlete within the MJP facilities, allowing the specialist to determine, on the spot, if any changes need to be made.
You may not be a professional athlete, but with the amenities provided at the MJP Sport Medicine office, you’ll certainly be treated like one.
Dry Needling
MJP uses dry needling to treat muscle pain. The treatment is performed by inserting a needle into muscle to create a local twitch reflex. This reflex is the first step in breaking the pain cycle which will decrease muscle contraction, reduce chemical irritation, improve flexibility, and decrease pain.
Cupping
MJP uses cupping as a form of soft tissue therapy, which can be useful in the treatment of tendinitis, tendinosis, and muscle pain. Cupping can also be beneficial in post-surgical patients who develop soft tissue restrictions. The treatment is performed by using a pneumatic pump and plastic vacuum cups to achieve prolonged soft tissue stretch.
Graston Technique®
MJP uses the Graston Technique® as soft tissue mobilization therapy. It is beneficial in breaking up fascial restrictions, scar tissue, and detecting areas of chronic inflammation. The instrument-based treatment is performed by using therapeutic exercises with specially designed stainless-steel instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver an effective means of manual therapy.
HydroWorx®
MJP uses a HydroWorx® underwater treadmill to help athletes simulate land-based walking, running or sport-specific activities without the bodyweight and joint impact that is experienced on land. MJP also houses contrast baths (hot and cold tubs), cold to help control joint inflammation and enhance muscle recovery, and hot to relax tight muscles and stimulate the release of endorphin.
NormaTec®
MJP uses NormaTec sequential compression therapy to help athletes recover faster by reducing muscle soreness and improving circulation.
Game Ready®
MJP uses Game Ready® cold compression to help reduce swelling, minimize pain, and, speed and enhance your body’s natural healing abilities, by simultaneously applying active air compression and adjustable cold therapy.
Other therapy techniques include, but are not limited to: Manual Therapy, Myofascial Release, Cold-Laser Therapy, Kinesio® Taping, Digital Body Composition Analysis & Monitoring, and Whole Body Vibration.
Whether you’re a high school or college athlete, a professional competitor or a weekend warrior, the Michael Johnson Performance Sports Medicine team can help you regain mobility and reach your full athletic potential.
