Many high school baseball players have dreams to continue playing after they graduate; in college, or in the pros. Some achieve that dream, and some change dreams. At Michael Johnson Performance, we’re helping one group of those athletes get just a little closer to making that dream a reality.
After high school, players can take numerous paths toward their goals. One of those paths could include The Complete Showcase (TCS) Post Grad program. TCS is a concept that gives players the benefit of a college baseball program, without losing a year of athletic eligibility. The program is designed to allow high school graduates to take college classes at the local Collin County Community College. (Athletes are strongly encouraged to take classes, but they are not required.) The rest of their time is spent training both on the field, and at the MJP facilities.
Beginning in Summer 2017, MJP welcomed the TCS Post Grad team to the facilities in McKinney.
“The goal of our program is to be world-class,” Justin Cunningham, TCS Head Baseball Coach, said, “we have to surround ourselves with like-minded people. MJP is a world class facility, with world-class coaches.”
The team trains at MJP for two hours, five days a week. Their training includes strength, speed, power, conditioning, rotational throws and recovery. Most of the activities performed by the team are typical to ones you would see in gyms across the country, dynamic warm-up, lifting and reactive drills. But the coaching team at MJP always works hard to integrate “out-of-the-box” activities to keep athletes engaged and sometimes entertained. Regeneration Wednesday is one day that rarely looks the same. Occasionally, you’ll walk out onto the floor on Wednesday and see a group of TCS players practicing Down Dog in their yoga rotation, or you’ll walk outside and see the group in the pool participating in active recovery.
“I love the team atmosphere that TCS brings to MJP every day. The energy they bring to the training facility is special,” Austin Kirpes, MJP Performance Specialist, said. “There is never a dull moment because everybody is extremely familiar with each other. Everybody holds their teammate accountable, because they all have a common goal in mind.”
